Bernd Schulze won the Club’s Men’s Singles tournament again this year, for the third time in succession. But he had to work very hard for his title with Matt Cross, finalist for the second time, playing very well and challenging the champion.
Fortunately the rain stopped and the conditions were dry, but windy, for the final on the morning of Saturday October 1st. There were several breaks of serve in the tough playing conditions, but in the end Bernd won 6-3, 6-4 – a narrow victory.
A number of Club members including Sandra Eccles, Helen Edmead, Fang Liu and Kathy Byra watched and enjoyed the excellent standard of tennis. Matt’s supporters included Liam from Bowerham and his girlfriend and everyone really appreciated the excellent rallies.
Thank you very much to Derek Metcalfe for acting as umpire again this year, and congratulations to Bernd. And thank you to Sandra Eccles and Susan Lucas for tournament arrangements.
